Buying a Yorkie: Important Information to Consider
The Yorkshire Terrier is fast becoming the most popular dog breed in the world.
All across the globe families are opting for the Yorkie to be their family companion because of the fact that they are so ideal.
They suit pretty much all environments from apartments to open fields and farms.
Yorkies are versatile and lovable no matter where you place them.
It is no wonder why people are interested in seeking out the Yorkie to add to their home.
Before you do go out and get the first Yorkie you find, you should know a few important things that will serve you well.
Whether you have purchased dogs before and are now interested in purchasing a Yorkie, or whether you have never purchased a dog before at all. This guide will help you and can act as a point of reference for anyone interested in adding a lovable, beautiful Yorkshire Terrier to their lives and to their homes.
Believe me when I say you will not regret this decision – a home is always happier when a Yorkie lives inside of it.
Choosing the right breeder:
This is by far the most important part of the process of purchasing a Yorkie.
Why is this?
Firstly, you do not want to get scammed by someone trying to take your money and run. I have seen so many poor and innocent people who are so desperate for a Yorkie that they throw all sense of intelligence and caution out the window and for some reason are happy to trust complete strangers over the internet with their money.
Then they complain when they get scammed as after sending the money they never hear from their alleged breeder again.
Next, you absolutely do not want to support a puppy mill nor support a breeder who has no idea what they are doing and are just trying to monetize the fact their dog has become pregnant.
In both instances you cannot trust the breeder’s expertise (or lack thereof) or knowledge on their Yorkie’s lineage nor can you trust them to help you in the event of things going wrong.
Why are these points important?
Because if no one knows the lineage of the Yorkie, they may not be pure Yorkie at all.
Nor can you be confident in the health record of genetics in the Yorkie Dam and Sire.
For reference – a Dam is the mother Yorkie, and the Sire is the father Yorkie of a litter of puppies.
Worst case scenario is you develop a beautiful friendship with your new Yorkie puppy and a few months or years down the line they develop serious, expensive and heart-breaking congenital illness due to genetics and not due to the way you have raised them.
What is worse in this instance is that you cannot expect the breeder to help you in any way.
Why would this be a problem anyway?
It would be a problem because Yorkies are known for having health conditions and illnesses – the chance of these are increased a lot by bad or shady genetics in unknown Yorkie ancestry.
A great breeder will only breed pedigreed and registered Yorkshire Terriers.
They will also only breed the best of the best to lower the chance of any undesirable traits, behaviours or health conditions that any of their Yorkies do have.
A great breeder will also put in the time, effort, patience and money required to have the best puppies available: Yorkie puppies are susceptible to a myriad of conditions in the first 3 months of life – including but not limited to: Hypoglycaemia and vaccine allergic reactions.
A quality breeder will not even consider selling their Yorkies before 3 months of age. It is important for the puppy to be with the Dam for up to 3 months before being sold into a brand-new environment and home.
Another sure-fire way to identify a quality breeder is with a contract and guarantee they present to you before the sale of the puppy.
In this contract they will guarantee the health of the puppy for the first twelve months in writing. Should any event arise where it is obvious there is a congenital health defect then you will be able to get a refund or potentially have them subsidise the veterinarian bills that are required.
They also many give you the option of replacing the puppy you have but since you have had the puppy for a while it may be hard to say yes to that.
This information is important to know when you or someone you know is interested in buying a Yorkie puppy. You cannot be over prepared so do as much research as possible!
